Amy Stephens has spent her life running a race most women are told isn’t theirs to run.
It started in a therapist’s office — dark paneling, books lining the shelves, and a woman who hadn’t slept in two years sitting across from a doctor named Vincent Rue. She had come in broken: years of infertility, a miscarriage, clinical depression, and a personality that had never quite fit the spaces she was given. She was waiting to be fixed.
Instead, Dr. Rue looked at her test results, looked up, and laughed. “Amy,” he said, “you’re a Thoroughbred.”
That was the moment she finally had language for who she was.
A former Colorado House Majority Leader, Washington DC political appointee, and national advocate for children and families, Amy has spent more than three decades working at the intersection of faith, policy, and purpose. She was Dr. James Dobson’s first government affairs representative at Focus on the Family, rose to lead Colorado’s House majority, served as Senior Advisor at the U.S. Administration for Children and Families — where her portfolio included foster care, adoption, child welfare, and youth risk behavior — and advised Fortune 500 clients as a government affairs executive at Dentons US LLP, the world’s largest law firm.
She is also a mother who stood by her son Nick’s dream to be a Division 1 baseball player and be accepted to a top college. While an excellent 4.0 student, Nick faced learning challenges which required more than just a tutor. With no roadmap, no “name” to the learning challenge, and no guarantees — the challenge gave her something no resume could: the perspective of a woman who knows what it feels like to press forward when the path isn’t clear. Nick did accomplish his Division 1 baseball dream as well as attending Lehigh University on scholarship. He’s now an attorney on the East Coast, married, and a father himself.
Thoroughbred Woman was born from more than thirty-five years of living inside this calling — through public leadership and private heartbreak, seasons of influence and seasons of isolation, betrayal, loss, exhaustion, and the hard-won knowledge that design does not disappear under pressure.
This website is for every woman who has been told she is “too much” or “too (insert any powerful word) and who suspects that’s not a flaw to manage, but a design to steward.
Amy lives in Colorado with her husband of 42 years, Ron.
